Prowers County, Colorado, Opposes Senate Bill 25-003, Calls on Governor Polis to Veto Legislation
4/9/25 - The Board of County Commissioners and the Sheriff of Prowers County, Colorado, have jointly passed a resolution opposing Senate Bill 25-003, "Semiautomatic Firearms & Rapid-Fire Devices." The resolution, which was adopted unanimously by the Board of County Commissioners and Sheriff Sam Zordel, urges Governor Jared Polis to veto the legislation, citing concerns that the bill violates the constitutional rights of citizens, imposes unfair burdens on law- abiding individuals, and adds additional workloads to the Sheriff's Department.
The Board and Sheriff emphasize their commitment to protecting the constitutional rights of all Prowers County residents, particularly the right to bear arms, as guaranteed by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution and Article II, Section 13 of the Colorado Constitution.
Commissioner Cook "We are committed to protecting the rights of our citizens, and this bill represents an overreach on the rights of law-abiding firearm owners. We call on Governor Polis to veto this legislation and keep the Second Amendment intact here in Colorado".
Commissioner Stagner: "This bill is not only a threat to individual freedoms, but it places unnecessary burdens on communities like ours. This demonstrates how out of touch the majority is at the state level when it comes to rural areas and our way of life".
Commissioner Harmon: "It creates more problems and solves nothing, pushing costly mandates onto counties like ours. The Governor should reject this bill for the sake of both our rights and our resources."
Sheriff Zordel: "This bill would make it more difficult and more financially onerous for everyday citizens to exercise their rights. Rights are not something to be purchased. This hassling of law-abiding citizens does not improve public safety."
The Board of County Commissioners and the Sheriff of Prowers County are committed to ensuring that any legislative action regarding firearms and public safety is effective, respects individual rights, and does not create unnecessary financial or bureaucratic barriers for citizens in rural communities.
