La Junta Mayor Urges Governor Polis to Fund Obstetric Services at Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center
To The Honorable Governor Jared Polis State Capitol Denver, CO 80203
Sir, I am writing to you today as the Mayor of La Junta, Colorado, to urge you to provide funding to keep the obstetric services at Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center open.
The recent announcement of the planned closure of these services on April 30, 2025, has sent shockwaves throughout our community, and we are counting on your support to prevent this devastating loss.
The closure of obstetric services at Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center would not only affect the health and well-being of expectant mothers in our community but also have far-reaching consequences for our local economy and healthcare system. As you may know, our hospital is the only one in the region that provides these critical services, and its closure would force pregnant women to travel long distances to receive the care they need. We understand that the hospital's decision to close obstetric services was not made lightly, and we appreciate the efforts of the hospital's leadership to explore alternative solutions.
However, we firmly believe that with the right funding and support, we can keep these essential services open and continue to provide high-quality care to our community. Therefore, I respectfully request that you consider providing funding to support the continuation of obstetric services at Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center.
We estimate that the annual cost of keeping these services open is approximately $1.5 million, which is a small price to pay for the health and well-being of our community. I would like to request a meeting with you to discuss this matter further and explore possible solutions.
I am confident that together, we can find a way to keep these critical services open and ensure that our community continues to receive the care it needs. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Joseph Ayala, Mayor of La Junta
