Russell Gale Adkins, 75, of La Junta, Colorado, passed peacefully in his sleep on January 5, 2025. Russell was born July 21, 1949, in Rocky Ford, Colorado to William and Laura Adkins.
Russell enlisted in the Army October 23, 1968, and proudly served our nation until his discharge in 1971. During his time in the US Army, Russell was deployed to Vietnam and earned multiple awards for his service.
Russell was awarded a Purple Heart, September 22, 1969, for his service in Vietnam for wounds received in connection with military operations against a hostile force. His efforts in combat also earned him a US Air Medal. Russell was also awarded the Army Commendation Medal, November 15, 1969, for meritorious service and a National Defense Medal.
After his time in the service, Russell worked as a commercial fisherman with another Vietnam veteran for over 20 years earning him the nickname “Captain.” Russell enjoyed talking about his time as a fisherman and his time spent on the New Jersey boardwalk. Russell was a good carpenter and enjoyed building. He was a hard worker until his health declined.
He is survived by his son Dustin Adkins, brother James Adkins of La Junta, CO, and sister Shirley (John) Kincheloe of Spring Town, TX. He is also survived by great nephews Clint and Chet Adkins and Jeffrey Martin, great niece Shaquanna Vigil and her children Uriah and Azzy Vigil. Russell is preceded in death by his parents, son, Matthew Adkins, brother, Harvey “Sonny” Adkins and sister-in-law Diane Adkins.
Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date this year.
