Josephine "Josie" Medina, age 91, of Las Animas, Colorado peacefully passed away on January 8, 2025 surrounded by the love of family, in the warmth of her home.
Josie was born September 12, 1933 in Las Animas, Colorado to Joe Muniz and Lucy Medina (Martinez). Josie lived most of her life in Las Animas. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and graduate of Bent County High School, Class of 1952.
Josie married the love of her life, Richard Medina, in July of 1952. Josie was the light of Richard’s life. They found love as young teenagers, and it was a love that endured. Josie and Richard built a beautiful life together in Las Animas where they raised their five children. Together they owned and operated Medina’s Bar and Cafe, an old hometown favorite.
Josie Medina was one of a kind. She was small in stature, mighty in spirit, and steadfast in integrity. Josie was stern, but fair and always showed compassion. A woman of boundless energy, Josie gave everything to ensure the people in her life were taken care of. Her sassy sense of humor brought endless amusement. Her home was filled with warmth of family, delicious food, and boisterous laughter, and Josie always offered a seat at her table. She was loved by so many and will be missed by all.
She is proceeded in death by the love her life, Richard Medina; her infant son, Richard Anthony Medina; parents, Joe Muniz and Lucy Medina; sister, Frances Trujillo; in-laws, Paul and Annie Medina.
Josie is survived by her children, Deb Medina of La Junta, Pat Medina Camacho (Anthony) of Colorado City, Cindy Collins (Larry) of Las Animas, Rick Medina (Lisa) of La Junta, Jeanette Torrez of Las Animas; sister, Jean Apodaca of La Junta; sister-in-law, Linda Trujillo (Manuel) of Colorado Springs; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held May 9, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) the Bent County-Las Animas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Arkansas Valley Hospice.
