UPDATE: Fatal Crash on Highway 36 at Lefthand Canyon Drive
Cause of crash and other factors
(Boulder, COLO) The family dog who was also a passenger in the crash was transported to the veterinary and put down due to extent of injury.
The driver and deceased passenger are both out of Castle Rock. The driver is a 43 year old male. The deceased passenger is a 43 year old female. Troopers have determined the driver of the crash was asleep at the wheel, causing the crash. It was also determined that the deceased female was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash.
Original Release:
(BOULDER, COLO) At 9:46 a.m. this morning, the Colorado State Patrol responded to a report of a single vehicle rollover crash on Highway 36 at Lefthand Canyon Drive.
Troopers on scene have confirmed that a Jeep heading north on Highway 36 traveled through the center grass median before rolling and coming to rest in the southbound lanes of Highway 36. Two adult occupants, including the driver, were killed on scene and two passengers were transported to a hospital with moderate of injuries. The passengers were the children, age 11 and 16, of the deceased parties.
The road was initially closed in both directions between Nelson Road and Neva Road. Currently the southbound lanes of Highway 36 remain closed at Lefthand Canyon Drive.
This remains an active investigation, with investigators still on scene. All possible causes for this crash are still under investigation. The identities of the deceased parties will be released by the Boulder County Coroner following proper notifications.
