(CASTLE ROCK, COLO) Last night on New Years Eve, December 31, 2024, just after 8:00 p.m. the front range experienced an unexpected storm causing hazardous conditions on I-25 near Castle Rock. Rain quickly froze on road surfaces resulting in multiple property damage crashes between mile posts 179 and 180 in both directions of I-25.
Beginning at 8:21 p.m., troopers responded to reports of crashes in that area. By 8:30 p.m., troopers called for the closure of I-25 in both directions due to icy conditions. The interstate was closed between Plum Creek Parkway and Tomah Road for multiple hours.
The last reported crash occurred at 8:53 p.m. During the 8 o’clock hour, troopers responded to crashes involving a minimum of 12 vehicles, including a crash involving a Castle Rock firetruck, ambulance, and battalion truck. Troopers directed many more motorists with minor property damage to safely leave the area and file online reports.
The interstate remained closed until 1:30 a.m. on the January 1, 2025, to ensure the road was safe for travel.
