Today at approx 2:33pm, we responded to a reported structure fire at 506 Lawrence in La Junta. Upon arrival moderate smoke was seen coming from the peak of the roof and from the eves of the house.
Bystanders driving by noticed the smoke and alerted the occupants of the house and assisted them out of the house.
Chief Davidson took IC and called out a working structure fire. Crews deployed 2 attack lines inside the structure.
Utilities were shut off. Crews made an aggressive attack through the ceiling to find fire actively burning in the attic around the chimney area. The fire was contained quickly.
The ladder truck was deployed to help gain access to the peak of the roof since it was metal roofing.
Crews then switched to salvage and overhaul to make sure all hot spots were extinguished. DFPC Eng 34 assisted with fire suppression.
PD blocked traffic for us and La Junta Electric Dept and Blackhills Energy responded to secure the utilities. Cause of the fire was from a malfunctioning wood burning stove pipe that ran through the attic. No injuries noted and thank you to the bystanders who assisted.
