Springfield Police Investigate Multiple Tents Set Up at Residential Property, Provide Time to Address Ordinance Violations
This evening the Springfield Police Department received a complaint about what appeared to be a small “tent city” beginning to form at a residence within town limits. What reportedly started as a single tent had quickly grown, with multiple tents now set up on the property.
Officers responded just before midnight in order to address how the tents were being used. During the contact, officers also observed that the residential structure on the property has been accumulating trash outside for some time and appears to be using a generator as a primary power source.
The occupants were advised of the town ordinances related to garbage accumulation, the use of tents for habitation, and the use of loud generators as a primary residential power source within town limits.
Rather than immediately moving toward citations, the occupants were provided with what we believe is a sufficient compliance window to correct the violations.
Situations like this are one of the reasons towns have ordinances in place. They exist to maintain basic health, safety, and quality of life standards for everyone in the community. In some cases, once people are made aware of the issue, it can be corrected quickly without further enforcement. That is always the preferred outcome.
Issues like this are also, at their core, a matter of respect for the surrounding neighborhood. People live nearby, raise families nearby, and take pride in their homes and property. Conditions that involve accumulating trash, makeshift living arrangements, and constant generator noise can affect the quality of life for those around them.
