230 Acres Burned as Agricultural Fire Spreads Near Highway 101; Crews Working to Contain Blaze

On Monday, March 9th, 2026, at approximately 1442 hours, fire crews responded to a report of an agricultural burn that had spread beyond its intended area. Fire crews quickly arrived on scene and began working to prevent the fire from spreading across Highway 101.

Upon arrival, personnel observed the fire moving through agricultural fields due to dry conditions and wind. Crews immediately began suppression efforts and established containment lines to prevent the fire from crossing the roadway and spreading to nearby properties.The fire has burned approximately 230 acres of agricultural land. Crews are currently still working to contain the fire and are conducting suppression and mop-up operations.

Assistance on scene includes the Bent County Sheriff’s Office, the Las Animas Volunteer Fire Department, and Colorado State fire crews, who are assisting with fire suppression and traffic control.
