Planning for Rosemont Reservoir Campground on Pikes Peak Advances
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Springs City Council approved a resolution today for expanded recreation at Rosemont Reservoir State Wildlife Area on Pikes Peak. The approval advances a collaborative effort between Colorado Springs Utilities and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to move forward with planned recreation improvements. The site is currently open to licensed anglers.
The City Council vote follows support of a Springs Utilities Board vote on Jan 25. Today’s milestone allows planning for Rosemont Campground to proceed, culminating years of coordination to expand public access and recreation, protect critical watershed resources, and maintain safe utility operations.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife will lead efforts to design, establish and operate the new campground, providing on-site management and stewardship to ensure recreation remains compatible with watershed protection, land management objectives, and public safety.
“Today’s vote represents meaningful progress and a shared commitment to increased public access and recreation,” said Frank McGee, regional manager for CPW’s Southeast Region. “Importantly, it also represents a responsible approach conducted with support from Springs Utilities and City Council.”
Rosemont Reservoir is located approximately 12 miles southwest of Colorado Springs on the south side of Pikes Peak. The reservoir and surrounding lands are currently managed by CPW as the Rosemont Reservoir SWA, with seasonal fishing opportunities.
Current campground considerations include basic campsites, day-use parking, non-motorized boating and an ADA-accessible restroom. While actual timelines will be implemented through transparent, established planning and public processes, the campground has potential to be open in time for the combined Colorado 150th (sesquicentennial) and U.S. 250th (semiquincentennial) combined birthday celebrations on July 4, 2026.
