Late Night Fatal Crash on Highway 287
Highway 287 was reopened at 8:50 a.m.
(Baca County, Colo) – On January 21, at approximately 11:39 p.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to a call of a fatal crash in Baca County involving three semis on Highway 287 at milepost 3 just north of the Oklahoma state line.
Initial reports indicate a Peterbilt semi hauling a trailer, driven by an adult male, was southbound on Highway 287 near milepost 3 and a Volvo semi hauling a trailer, driven by a 48-year-old male out of Florida, was traveling southbound behind the Peterbilt. In the opposite lane, a second Peterbilt semi hauling a trailer, driven by a 54-year-old male out of Texas, was northbound at the same location.
The southbound Peterbilt crossed over the center line of the road, striking the northbound Peterbilt in a head-on collision, and then continued its path of travel, coming to rest in the southbound lane of travel before becoming fully engulfed in flames. The northbound truck continued on its path, going off the right side of the road, before stopping.
The southbound Volvo drove off the right side of the road to avoid the crash, striking a barbed wire fence, before coming to a stop.
The adult male, who was driving the southbound Peterbilt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Highway 287 was closed during the initial investigation. It reopened at 8:50 a.m. this morning.
