Early-Morning Fire Damages Ports to Plains Travel Plaza; Firefighters Contain Blaze After Major Multi-Agency Effort

Commercial Structure Fire at Ports to Plains Travel Plaza Contained After Multi-Agency Response in Prowers County

At 2:56AM December 3rd The Prowers County Rural Fire Department and Lamar Ambulance were paged to a commercial structure fire at 33110 County Road 7 that housed a restaurant and convenience store, known as Ports to Plains Travel Plaza. On scene units reported flames showing on the west side of the structure midway of the building.

Command conducted a 360 of the structure determining the fire was isolated to an office area, this structure also had a common attic throughout that provided flame spread partially into the convenience store. Crews deployed 2 handlines and used a master stream to control the fire. 

Wiley Rural Fire Protection District and Lamar Fire Department were requested for mutual aid for personnel and apparatus.

Lamar Fire assisted with the ventilation and forceable entry to numerous doors and windows.  Wiley Fire utilized 2 tankers to shuttle approximately 6600 gallons of water.

A total of 10,000 gallons of water was used to achieve total extinguishment of the fire. Lamar Ambulance transported one occupant to Prowers Medical Center. The last PRFD unit to clear the scene was at 6:54PM. 

Prowers County Sheriff’s Office and Division of Fire Safety and Control Investigations are in the process of determining cause and origin of the fire, any questions can be directed to Prowers County Sheriffs Office. 15 personnel responded with 8 apparatus.
