Otero College Shines at 2025 UCCS Ethics Case Competition Addressing Discriminatory AI Resume Tool

The UCCS Ethics Case Competition took place on Nov. 8, 2025 requiring students throughout Colorado's universities and Colleges to implement ethical, financial, and legal business solutions to struggling companies.

This year's case centered around a software engineering firm founded by Veterans that accidentally created a discriminatory AI resume sorting tool, and implemented it within their company practices before knowing what problems it posed.

The following students represented Otero College: Jansen Ediger, Isabel Rosario, Jennifer Gardner, Parker Toennis, Chloe Brill, and Amaru Franz. Psychology Faculty Caitlyn Ornelas advised both Otero College teams. Toennis, Brill, and Franz's team placed 2nd in the 2-year college category. Pikes Peak State College placed first and Pueblo Community College placed third.

"These students worked hard over the past five weeks, both independently and cohesively, meeting my deadlines, following my rules and feedback, and brainstorming creative, ethical solutions to the required business model. I am incredibly happy that they could enjoy this real-world experience and add to their resume's."

"Sometimes, the best learning happens outside the classroom! I would also like to thank Jaclynn Wilson for taking time to help us run a mock presentation before competition, the physical plan and Joyce Beal for ensuring our safe transportation to Colorado Springs, Kyle Lasley for allowing me to submit these student teams this year, and anyone else involved, big or small. We couldn't bring home that trophy without each one of you!" - Caitlyn Ornelas
