As our hearts are infinitely broken, we take this time to give everyone who did not know her, the obligatory obituary for our shining light, Lena.
Lena Suzanne Dukes entered this world with vengeance on June 13, 1976. Being rushed to the ICU in Shreveport, Louisiana. Born full term, Mom said “she was the biggest baby there,” with a full head of jet-black hair. Lena decided after a few weeks to stick around for a while and came home to parents, Johnny and Linda Dukes and older brother Chris Dukes, and sister, Carroll Dukes, and a whole slew of relatives. Brother, Neil Dukes, arrived a few years later to be her cohort growing up.
Our Lena was a cherished member of our family, our community and our lives, whose kindness, warmth, and generosity touched the lives of all who knew her whether they realized it or not. Bringing trinkets of love to whomever she crossed paths with. Lena left this world unexpectedly on October 14, 2025.
Early Life and Family
Lena Suzanne Dukes was born in Lake Providence, Louisiana. The family later relocated to San Angelo, Texas and then to Springfield, Colorado. Growing up in Springfield, from the age of 8, Lena demonstrated a love of people and a deep appreciation for family, blood or not. She was a devoted sibling, sharing countless memories of love, laughter and embraced chaos.
Career and Accomplishments
After graduating from Springfield High School in 1994, she followed her passion for caregiving, working at the Long-Term Care Center at Springfield Hospital along with her best friends, Shelly Wade and Autumn Boyer Marschall, dedicating their lives to the care of others. Lena loved people and especially her friends, family and elderly residents who loved and adored her as well. Lena left a lasting impact on anyone she ever met and inevitably will be remembered for years eternally.
Personal Life and Legacy
Outside of work, Lena spent her time cooking, baking, painting, drawing, gardening, and participating in a variety of creative activities. She spent time with family and friends, making memories, many times involving spontaneous decisions or road trips. She loved all types of music, and it was always an adventure when she decorated for her favorite holidays, Halloween and Christmas. Lena is known for her compassion, sense of humor, and consistent support for others.
Lena is survived by Johnny Dukes, Colby Dukes (Father Michael Barwick), Robert Williams (significant other), Neil Dukes, Carroll Dukes, Chris Dukes (Edwina Dukes), Tressa Moore (Trevor Gonser), Zaiden Moore, Cash Cooper-Dukes (Serenity Cline), Beau Dukes (Kenzie Carpenter), Brinlyn Dukes (Kyle Klann), Braylee Dukes, Axton Dukes, Saylor Dukes, Uncle Lynn Dukes, Richard Perry (JoAnn Perry), Aunt Betty and family, her Best of Friends, Shelly Wade and Autumn Boyer Marschall and countless friends, cousins, furry friends and family who will continue to honor her legacy by living with the same kindness and grace that she exemplified.
Preceded in death by mother, Linda Dukes; daughter, Sheylean Ranae Dukes-High; maternal grandparents, Wheeler C. “Blondie” and Lucille Perry; paternal grandparents, Troyce and Minnie Lee Dukes.
Celebration of Life
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at Springfield Cemetery, beginning at 12:30, with a Celebration of Life following at Bernard’s Barnyard @ the fairgrounds. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Lena are invited to attend and celebrate the remarkable life she lived.
Farewell
Though Lena is no longer with us, her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. May she rest in peace.
