Colorado Springs Police Arrest La Junta Homicide Suspect After Standoff

At about 3 PM on Thursday, August 21, 2025, CSPD tactical units were assisting the US Marshals Office in attempting to contact a homicide suspect with an active arrest warrant in the 5300 block of Gentle Wind Road, on the east side of Colorado Springs.

Positive ID was established, and numerous announcements were made ordering the individual to exit the home and surrender peacefully.

The suspect barricaded themself in the house and refused to surrender.

At 4:22 p.m., a shelter-in-place was issued for the immediate area.

Several attempts were made to de-escalate the situation.

Tactical units eventually deployed chemical irritants into the home.

The suspect eventually surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted at 7:22 PM.

The suspect is identified as 40-year-old Chezaray Chavez.

Mr. Chavez will be booked into the El Paso County Jail for an attempted first-degree murder charge out of La Junta.

All Parties Considered Innocent Until Proven Guilty in a Court of Law.
