At approximately 5:40 pm on May 27th the Canon City Area Fire Protection District was called to the Super 8 Motel on North 19th street for a confirmed structure fire. Upon arrival fire crews found a fire on the exterior of the building that had extended into the attic space. Fire crews made an aggressive interior and exterior fire attack and were able to extinguish the fire. One exterior wall and approximately 25% of the attic space sustained fire damage with smoke and water damage extending beyond that.
There was one injury reported to a firefighter who was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and later released. The firefighter is expected to make a full recovery. There were no civilian injuries reported.
The origin of the fire appears to be near a picnic type table on the exterior of the building. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, the motel has reportedly been closed for some months.
