Las Animas Woman Arrested After High-Speed Chase with Infant and Juvenile in Car, Faces Multiple Charges
On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at approximately 5:15 p.m., the Bent County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance in the area of 6th Street and Lincoln Avenue in the city of Las Animas.
As deputies approached the area, they observed a blue sedan traveling toward them at a high rate of speed and driving recklessly. Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle sped off. The vehicle traveled west on 6th Street, ignoring multiple stop signs and the traffic light at 6th Street and Bent Avenue, nearly causing three accidents. A pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued west on 6th Street and then turned north on Elm Street. The vehicle came to an abrupt halt, and deputies conducted a high-risk stop. The driver and a juvenile passenger were removed from the vehicle and taken into custody. An infant was discovered in the back seat.
Medical personnel were requested to evaluate the infant and the juvenile; both were determined to be unharmed.
The driver was taken into custody. The juvenile was released after deputies secured the scene.
The driver, Michelle Salazar, was evaluated by ambulance crews and then booked into the Bent County Jail on the following charges:
Criminal Attempt – C.R.S. 18-2-101
Vehicular Eluding – C.R.S. 18-9-116.5
Reckless Endangerment – C.R.S. 18-3-208
Second Degree Kidnapping (2 counts) – C.R.S. 18-3-302
Child Abuse (2 counts) – C.R.S. 18-6-401
Assault in the Second Degree – C.R.S. 18-3-203(1)(c)
Driving on a Suspended License – C.R.S. 42-2-138
The suspect is being held at the Bent County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
