Gerald Thomas "Sonny" Berumen, 70, born on January 10, 1955, in La Junta, Colorado, passed away on March 28, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend known for his vibrant personality. Gerald's kindness, fun-loving spirit, and outgoing nature touched the lives of many around him.
Gerald dedicated himself to working as an electrician for the Department of Corrections. His commitment was evident not only through his work but also in his pursuit of education, having received training in electrician studies at the college level. Additionally, Gerald proudly served in the United States Army, demonstrating his dedication to his country.
Outside of work, Gerald had a myriad of hobbies and interests that he passionately pursued. He loved to cook, especially delighting his family one year with a special Thanksgiving dinner. Sports were another of his loves; he enjoyed watching football and baseball, often bringing friends and family together for games. Gerald also enjoyed being in nature, engaging in activities such as camping, fishing, and archery. A talented musician, he played the guitar and loved to sing, making every gathering memorable with his performances. Playing pool was also a favorite pastime that brought joy to both him and friends. Above all, Gerald treasured spending time with his family, forming connections and making memories that will be cherished forever.
Gerald is survived by his loving wife, Tammy Gallegos of Rocky Ford, CO; his son, Sylvester Berumen of La Junta, CO; and his stepsons, Terry (Christy Donner) Hillyer of Rocky Ford, CO, and Robert Hillyer of Rocky Ford, CO. He was adored by his nine grandchildren, who will miss their beloved grandfather deeply. Gerald is also survived by his sisters, Cynthia (Rich) Graston of Pueblo West, CO, and Elizabeth Harlan of Colorado Springs, CO, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will fondly remember him. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Eliseo and Leonila Berumen, and his sisters, Priscilla, Dolores, Phyllis, and Debra.
A graveside service to honor Gerald will be held on April 8, 2025, at 1:00 PM, at Rocky Ford Cemetery, located at 27980 County Road 20, Rocky Ford, CO 81067. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a life well-lived, celebrating the legacy of a kind man who cared deeply for those around him.
