Obituary

Clara Mae Carey of La Junta, Colorado, entered into rest, March 21, 2025, in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Forgan Oklahoma, May 31, 1937, to Bonnie and Elmer Riggs. Clara was 87 years of age.

She is survived by her children, Sandra (Brad) Carey-Schmidt of La Junta, Colorado, and Russ (Laurie) Carey of Trinidad, Colorado, and Devin James (Jen) Carey of Pueblo, Colorado. Her grandchildren include, Dustin (Nichole) Roberts, Raven Carey, Julia Carey, Hailie Carey, Krystina Carey, Justin Failing, Brandy Failing, and Amanda Failing. Clara also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Vivienne Roberts, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Clara is preceded in death by her parents, Bonnie and Elmer Riggs, her husband, Hershel Carey, and her daughters, Terry Ann Brinson and infant daughter, Christy Jo Carey.

Clara enjoyed reading books, sci-fi movies, and westerns. She was a devoted fan of Star Trek. She had a passion for trees, gardening, birds, and butterflies. Clara worked side by side with her husband in their excavation company, Carey’s Backhoe Service. She was always there for her children, offering advice whether needed or not. Clara was a very special person, loved by all who knew her.

A 10:00 A.M. grave side service will be held Friday April 4, 2025 at the Fairview Cemetery in La Junta, Colorado.
