Firefighters Contain Fire Near La Junta After Control Burn Escapes, No Injuries Reported
At approx 1137 this morning we received a call of dark smoke by the river bottom in North La Junta.
Chief Davidson found the location of the fire in the 27000 blk of Rd 809.
A couple of out buildings and a single wide modular home were on fire spreading through large old trees and large debris piles.
This area has no fire hydrants so mutual aid from Rocky Ford Fire Dept, DFPC Eng 34, Cheraw Fire Dept, Las Animas Fire, OCSO Wildland engine, a water tender from Otero County Road and Bridge was called in.
Crews worked quick to knock down the perimeter of the fire to keep it from spreading. Crews then worked defensive attack on the modular and other debris piles. Water shuttle was established for the tenders to supply to other trucks with water.
A very large old cotton wood tree had also caught fire and was burning on the inside of tree.
Crews attempted to make cuts to drop the tree but the chainsaws were not big enough so a excavator from Ft Lyon Canal was just down the road and we used it to push the tree over to extinguish the fire. No injuries.
The cause of the fire was from a control burn that got away from the home owner when the wind pick up. Thank you for all the help today everyone.
