CPW’s Southeast Region Seeks Volunteers to Assist in Parks, Wildlife Management

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Did your New Year’s resolution involve performing public service? Do you love wildlife and state parks and want to get involved with habitat improvement projects, trail building, wildlife monitoring or other projects? Maybe you want to help educate the public about wild animals.

Then Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Southeast Region invites you to classes where you can learn exactly what volunteering with CPW entails and how you can get involved.

Three volunteer workshops are scheduled in coming weeks – at the Southeast Region headquarters in Colorado Springs, at Lathrop State Park near Walsenburg and at Mueller State Park near Divide – to recruit newcomers to the agency’s volunteer corps.

“CPW volunteers make a direct impact in conserving the lands, waters and wildlife of Colorado,” said Jeanette Lara, CPW’s volunteer coordinator for the Southeast Region. “From the maintained trails at our state parks to the nest boxes that are providing habitat to songbirds, we have roles for everyone to get involved.”

In fact, Lara said CPW couldn’t accomplish nearly as much work as it does without important contributions from its volunteers.

“In 2024, volunteers in the Southeast Region contributed more than 35,000 hours of their time to wildlife monitoring, habitat improvement projects, and trail work,” Lara said. “Another big area of contribution was through education and outreach efforts, which are focused on spreading important messages about things like living responsibly with wildlife.”

Besides the satisfaction of giving back to the community, volunteers enjoy unique experiences with wildlife and parks, they meet new people and make friends, Lara said.

Volunteers serve in a variety of roles at a variety of locations, such as camp hosting, education and outreach, community science, habitat and trail work, maintenance and construction, wildlife projects, customer service, and more.

All the details will be covered at the workshops scheduled:
