Obituary

James Roland Bishop, Castle Builder, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 24, 1944, to Willard and Pauline (Perse) Bishop, they and his sister Johanna Trimble, precede him in passing. His surviving siblings are Susie (Charles) Steigerwalt, Will (Jim Kearney) Bishop and Otis Trimble.

He lived a passionate life and although his work would never be done, he was freed from the bonds of this earth on November 21, 2024. A survivor, renegade, visionary, humanitarian and at times a madman genius, Jim’s determination to create an evolving legacy tested every limit and literally moved mountains.

Jim and Phoebe Noakes crossed paths many time prior to a bodybuilding workout at a friend’s gym in 1966 where they ultimately fell in love. She was his one and only and their lives intertwined for 51 years. Jim and Phoebe were blessed with children Daniel, Valerie, Roy, and Donita. The family was devastated by Roy’s death in 1988 and Phoebe’s passing in 2018. Through grief, Jim reshaped the castle to honor their unfinished lives and catch his unending tears.

Jim counted the thousands of guests who visited Bishop Castle among those friends. Every rock was placed by his hand with the intention of creating a monument to be witnessed and enjoyed by all, without restriction, and free from government rule. His talent was unmatched and his storytelling will be deeply missed. Giving even after death, he donated his body to Science Care.

Memorial service will be Friday December 6th, 10 am, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 217 E. Mesa Ave, Pueblo, CO 81006. Everyone who loved Jim and his work is welcome to attend.

The family welcomes cards and donations sent to Bishop Castle, 12705 State Hwy 165, Rye, CO 81068.

There will be a public memorial at the Castle Summer 2025, those details will be posted when finalized.
