Cheraw Community Complex Groundbreaking Ceremony held April 28

The Cheraw community celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Cheraw Community Complex. Construction for this project will begin mid-May and is expected to be complete sometime in 2025.

A large crowd was on hand for this historic event. Welcoming the attendees to the groundbreaking was mayor David Howard. Howard talked about the significance of the town’s first park and community space. It was a vision that has taken several years to attain.

Debbie Phillips, Cheraw Development Committee chair expressed the committees appreciate to everyone who came and thanked them for being our guest to share this special historic day with us.

“This day would not have come to fruition if not for the hard work of the volunteers of the Cheraw Development Committee, the Cheraw Town Council and of course mayor Dave Howard and our town staff.” said Phillips “I cannot thank you enough.”

This has been a long and tedious process: this project started with a VISION.

A Vision to build an all-inclusive Community Complex. A complex which expresses and defines who Cheraw is.

A Community Complex which 25 years from today will remain special and remain the envy of all.

The new Cheraw Community Complex will feature a modern playground for our children of all ages, a Splash Pad to cool the hot summer days and all this in an environmentally friendly complex.

One of the unique features of the Pavilion will be the solar panels to provide electricity to the complex. The pavilion will be a 60ft x 100ft structure with Women’s, Men’s and a Family Restrooms, picnic tables, lights for evening events and enough space for large community and family gatherings.

“The Cheraw community is constructing this complex in preparation and anticipation of the transformation it will stimulate within our community,” said mayor Howard.

The Cheraw Development Committee acknowledged the grant funders who have made this complex a reality.  Joining the Cheraw Community for the groundbreaking was Sammie Trotter, GOCO Representative for the Eastern Region and who was instrumental in helping us secure a GOCO Grant for $883,700.

Other funders for this project include the Jonthan and Shari Fox Family Foundation which funded $1000 for our ADA Water Fountain with a bottle filler and the Changing Station that will be in the Family Restroom. The El Pomar Foundation grant of $9500 will be used to purchase benches throughout the complex.

The ceremonial first shovels of dirt were counted down by mayor David Howard. Members of the Cheraw Development Committee did the first shovels of dirt to officially open the construction of the new Cheraw Community Complex.

Refreshments of homemade cookies and lemonade were served by the committee to all who attended.
