Obituary

Donald Bernett Scofield was born November 16, 1939 in La Junta to Harrison Bernett Scofield & Doris Jean (Brandt) Scofield. Don grew up on the family farm, 10 miles south of Rocky Ford. He graduated from Rocky Ford High School in 1958 and then attended Otero Junior College. Don married Karlene Yeargan of Pueblo in September 1959.

The couple moved to a farm 10 miles south of Rocky Ford that they rented until a couple of years later. When Don turned 21 he bought the farm he rented and farmed until 2013. At that time he sold the farm land and kept the house & dry land which he sold in 2022. Don loved farming and was lucky to do what he loved best. Don worked at the sugar factory for 16 years as a lab foreman until the factory closed. During Don’s early married years he bowled in a league at Rocky Ford Bowling Lanes. Don was very active in Rocky Ford Jayces, where he served as local president and held a state office.

Don was a life member of Elks Lodge 1147. Don was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rocky Ford where he grew up in the church. As an adult he served as a trustee. For fun, Don rode his Harley and went on trips with friends, went fishing and traveled to Mexico, Alaska, cruises and went several times to Branson, MO. Don & Karlene enjoyed using their time share for 25 years.

Special times were spent with family and grandkids. Daughter: Jenny (Scott) VerBerkmoes, grandkids: Ashley (Andrew) Allen-Piña, great-grandkids Alaina & Adien, Brittney VerBerkmoes and Cody (Jackllene) VerBerkmoes and son Jerre Scofield.
