Bent’s Fort Chapter to tour Big Timber Museum
The Bent’s Fort Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association will be in the Lamar area for a Chapter event on Saturday, March 11. The morning will start at 10:30am at the Star School on Hwy 50 between Bent CO Roads 33 and 34 for a tour of the prairie schoolhouse. After a brief stay we will travel to the Prowers House west of Lamar for a tour of the house and lunch (bring your own). Chilly Day? No problem as the owner has said there will be a fire going in the fireplace.
After lunch the tour will travel to the Big Timbers Museum located north of Lamar. Museum Exhibits range from ancient Native American inhabitants; pioneers and homesteaders; an 1890’s Charles Fredrick Worth lace wedding gown; a variety of artifacts related to the Fleagle Gang robbery of the First National Bank in Lamar (first case solved using a fingerprint); antique wagons, cars, trucks, and items related to the Santa Fe Trail, and much more.
For those who wish to continue there will be a visit to the Lamar Welcome Center to view one of twelve Madonna of the Trail statues followed by going a little further south on Main St./Hwy 287 to see the Monument honoring the Zebulon Pike's stopover in 1806. The monument is located just off Memorial Drive.
Membership in the Bent’s Fort Chapter is $15 per year. To find out more about the event or the Chapter, please email bentsfortchapterSFTA@gmail.com. The Bent’s Fort Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and preserve the Santa Fe Trail and to promote awareness of the historical legacy associated with it.
