Lamar Man Arrested After Gunfight with Police Following Domestic Violence Incident

PRESS RELEASE: Shooting

Late Wednesday, February 26th, into the early morning of February 27th 2025, Officers from the Lamar Police Department were dispatched to the 1800 block of South 5th Street regarding a domestic violence, violation of no contact order complaint.  

Upon arrival Officers found the suspect, Zachariah McDonald,49 of Lamar, fleeing the scene on foot.  Officers chased McDonald on foot to the 1700 block of South 6th Street where McDonald displayed a handgun and fired multiple rounds at Officers.  

The Lamar Police Officers returned fire.  McDonald forced his way into a neighboring fenced yard where he barricaded himself inside of a structure. After a period of time, McDonald surrendered to law enforcement without further incident.  

McDonald was transported to the Prowers County Jail where he was charged with the following:

1. Attempted Murder in the First Degree (x2)

2. Assault on a Peace Officer in the First Degree (x3)

3. First Degree Burglary (x2)

4. Felony Menacing (x3)

5. Weapon by Previous Offender

6. Felony Criminal Mischief

7. Violation of a Protection Order

8. Resisting Arrest

9. Obstructing a Peace Officer

10. Domestic Violence

None of the individuals involved in this incident were injured.  The Officers involved in the shooting are currently on administrative leave pending the investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
