VFW Day of Service was celebrated this past week with Flag Day activities. The Las Animas, McClave, and Hasty Avenue of Flags flew proudly on Flag Day, which was Tuesday, June 14th. We thank the many volunteers that make this project happen. Friday, June 17th, the Post and Auxiliary held a Hamburger Fry and a Community Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Post.

Steve Bourne grilled up some delicious burgers/hot dogs provided by the Post; and Auxiliary members donated yummy salads and desserts. We were thankful for the many donations that the community offered for the dinner with 80 dinners sold. These donations will be used to support veterans’ needs in the community.

Fort Lyon Coalition Veterans and friends were offered a free lunch, and always come faithfully to help us with the Avenue and maintain the flag holes – their dedication is truly appreciated. This year we were especially proud to assist with hanging the Fort Lyon National Cemetery Avenue of Flags for Memorial Day.

Following lunch, we conducted a Community Flag Retirement Service. We taught the youth that attended (12 and under girls’ baseball team), how to properly fold flags; we narrated the meaning of each of the thirteen folds as they folded the flags; and then respectfully retired them. We weren’t able to actually burn the 70 retired flags that were donated due to windy conditions and a fire ban, but we plan to do this as soon as weather permits. God bless our Veterans and God Bless America!
