Colorado State Patrol Expands Steering Wheel Lock Program

(COLORADO) – The Colorado State Patrol is excited to announce the expansion of the popular anti-vehicle theft, steering wheel lock program. This program hands out steering wheel locks, an auto theft prevention device, to members of communities across Colorado. This program has now expanded to offer steering wheel locks to the Pueblo Community. These steering wheel locks are available at the Colorado State Patrol Office, 5615 Wills Blvd, Pueblo, CO 81008, Monday through Friday from 8 am-4 pm.

Reducing auto theft in Colorado is the primary function of the CSP business unit, the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA). Reducing auto theft in Colorado has a ripple effect across communities; when auto theft declines, other crime types and incidents also show notable reductions. Combatting auto theft continues to be a key mission of the Colorado State Patrol: to keep Colorado's roadways safe for residents, commerce, and visitors alike.

As part of CATPA and CSP's efforts to reduce motor vehicle theft, these steering wheel locks are available to Colorado residents to help deter and prevent motor vehicle theft. A steering wheel lock is a great way to enhance your vehicle's physical security. This empowering equipment is a great addition to any already robust theft-prevention routine.

A quality theft-prevention routine considers many potential factors to help deter and prevent vehicle theft. This should always include locking your car, every time – no matter where or for how long you will be away from your vehicle. Locked vehicles are the most secure when all keys are removed. Always remove extra, spare, or valet keys from a vehicle. Then, once fully locked and secured, consider a thorough vehicle cleanout. Thieves hate clean cars. What may seem like trash or unimportant items (like change, gym bags, or shopping bags from retailers) may not pique your interest, but small things left visible in a vehicle can create an incentive for a thief to target it over an empty, clean one. Take all items out of your vehicle and place any necessary items out of sight in the glove box or trunk. A clean, locked, and secured vehicle is a great way to prevent theft.

Then, when you take into account physical and environmental factors, parking a vehicle in a secure lot or a garage further protects it from theft. Take that chance to secure your car, clean out your garage and rest a little easier knowing your clean, locked, and secured vehicle is indoors. If the garage or secure parking is not an option, then street parking can further be secured through the use of devices such as the steering wheel lock, other physical devices like parking boots or shift/pedal immobilizers. For all vehicles, CATPA recommends using personal GPS tracking equipment. Purchasing stickers and placing them on the windows is a great way to send a message to any would-be thief. Not only is this vehicle secured and hardened, but it is also GPS-tracked and can be easily located in the event of a theft.

This multi-step approach is a great way to stop auto theft and make Colorado safer. Pick up your steering wheel lock today and help prevent motor vehicle theft and make Colorado's roads and communities safer from crime.
