Obituary

Marilyn Elizabeth Hansen passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Her sister, Martha Martinez, remained by her side day and night during her final days. She was born on September 6, 1952, in La Junta, Colorado, to Thomas M. Sisson and Margaret Elizabeth (Driscoll) Sisson. She was the third of 7 siblings.

Marilyn was a silly child who loved to laugh loud and smile big. Her joking ways earned her the nickname, “Mud Puddle,” from her father. Marilyn had a boisterous and infectious laugh, and a very dry sense of humor. She would make deadpan comments and exaggerated facial expressions to elicit laughter from others. She liked reminding people that her favorite color was purple. Marilyn was a member of the La Junta Tiger Sharks swim team. She did not like engaging in sports as much as she enjoyed watching others play and cheering them on.

Later in life, Marilyn met a Vietnam veteran named Stephen E. Hansen. They were in a relationship for a number of years before they made it official. They were married on Marilyn’s 55th birthday, September 6, 2007. They remained together until Steve’s passing in 2015.

Marilyn was an avid reader. She enjoyed thrillers and mystery books the most. She did Cross Stitch work for many years, making various things like baby blankets, Christmas stockings, and framed Cross Stitch art for family members. She enjoyed watching golf tournaments on TV while doing her Cross Stitch work. Marilyn was also known for her astounding ability to remember birthdays, anniversaries, and other important dates. She liked recalling specific details about people that most would have overlooked.

Marilyn adored her cats, who kept her company after Steve’s passing. Although Marilyn never thought of herself as an amateur photographer, she had a knack for capturing candid moments when people were not aware they were being photographed. She took many photographs throughout her life, which she kept in a collection of photo albums.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas M. and Margaret Sisson, her husband, Stephen E. Hansen, and her brother, John T. Sisson. Marilyn is survived by her siblings, Mary Ann Plantz, Margie (Pete) Sisson, Jim (Pam) Sisson, Jay (Deann) Sisson, and Martha (James) Martinez, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Marilyn’s name to Sangre de Cristo Community Care or Bluestem Village Nursing Home in La Junta. Marilyn’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Brenda and her team from Sangre de Cristo Hospice Care, and Michelle and her team from Bluestem Village, for providing Marilyn with dignity, comfort and care in her final days.
