Rocky Ford Fire Dept Reports on The Harwood Fire

At approximately 5:30 pm last night we were paged to a structure fire in the area of 11th street and Railroad Avenue.  Upon arrival we found that a large area of high grass and weeds were burning at a high rate of spread due to increased wind speeds.

The fire quickly advanced West into adjacent structures used for storing construction material and supplies.

We called for mutual aid from Manzanola Volunteer Fire Department La Junta Fire Department and Fowler Rural Fire Protection District.  We requested traffic control from Otero Sheriff Rocky Ford Police Department and Rocky Ford Public Works Department.  BNSF Railway was shut down during fire operations.  Black Hills Energy was requested due to powerlines needing isolated for fire fighter safety.

The entire set of structures are a total loss and cause of the fire is under investigation.  Smoke dispersal will continue to be a problem throughout the night as we continue mopup operations.

These responders did an outstanding job ensuring safe traffic control, and keeping the fire contained with no further damage to surrounding structures and no injuries to report.  Great job everyone!!
