Otero County on Stage One Fire Restrictions 4/25/22

The recent lack of significant moisture and the 120-day fire outlook demonstrate conditions are high for large unpredictable wildland fires. Discussion was held with Otero County Board of Commissioners, Otero County Sheriff, Otero County Emergency Manager and Fire Chiefs of Rocky Ford, La Junta, and Cheraw.

It was decided that Otero County will be enacting Stage 1 fire restrictions in all unincorporated areas of Otero County, La Junta Fire Protection Districts, Rocky Ford Fire Protection Districts and Cheraw Fire Protection District.

Otero County Stage 1 fire restrictions prohibits the following activities:

open burning, except fire and campfires within constructed fire grates inside developed camp and picnic grounds, charcoal grills and wood burning stoves at private residences.  These areas must be cleared of all flammable materials.  (exemptions allowed for agricultural burning on a case by case basis may be granted by the appropriate fire district.)

The sale or use of fireworks without a permit.

Outdoor smoking except inside a vehicle or stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren of all flammable materials.
